Icons Explained

Light Output

This icon is used to express the total projected light

output, with a new set of batteries, in Lumens. In general

terms, the higher the number the brighter the light.

Run Time

This icon is used to express the amount of time

elapsed at which the light output reaches a level

when the user would generally replace the batteries.

Range

This icon is used to show the distance in meters

that the beam projects onto a surface. Again, the

batteries need to be new.

Peak Beam Intensity

This icon is used to indicate the intensity of the

projected beam that does not vary with distance.

Water Resistance

This icon is used to indicate water resistantance.

IPX4 means that it can be splashed from all directions.

Impact Resistance

This icon is used to designate how impact resistant the

light is, as reported in meters and dropped on concrete.

Shopping for a portable light and trying to compare the features

and beneﬁ ts of several different lights can be confusing. Until

very recently there was no consistency in how speciﬁ cations

were presented by manufacturers.

The industry recognized this inconsistency in communicating

features and benefits to the consumer and collaborated to

write a standard for the following products: hand-held portable

ﬂ ashlights, spotlights and headlamps. The ANSI/NEMA FL1 Standard

has been widely accepted in the industry, and supported by

many national retailers.
